A dance studio is a place, which is considered as one of the places where a choreographer works. This project examines one particular material object often used in the dance studios: a dancemat. A dancemat offers a techno-industrial plane, which rubs off and erases the characteristics of the surface beneath it attempting to homogenize the surface of the space. It offers a feeling of safety and it is considered an ideal plane to work. It separates the bodies above the messy and noisy ground. The dancemat offers an apparent neutralized and atemporal topography in which the body is put, thrown, and positioned on. The dancemat is a place, which is nowhere, and at the same time, it possesses the capacity to interact with many spheres e.g. ballet, butoh, and belly-dance. Literally, the sensuous body is rubbed against a dancemat. It is also a by-product of oil.

In this project a choreographer examines the materiality of the dancemat by displacing it from its appropriate use. The project oscillates through on-going metamorphosis that proliferate simultaneously to living sculpture, dance, choreography, installation, performance and live-art.

Tanssistudio on  yleisesti ymmärretty olevan yksi paikoista, jossa koreografi työskentelee. Projektin keskiössä on yksi tanssistudiossa käytetty erityinen materiaalinen objekti: tanssimatto. Tanssimatto tarjoaa tekno-teollisen pinnan, joka peittää sen alla olevat ominaisuudet. Se tarjoaa turvallisen alustan, jolla liikkua. Tanssimatto homogenisoi tilaa. Sen on tarkoitus olla ideaali pinta työskennellä. Se erottaa ruumiit sekavasta ja äänekkäästä maaperästä. Tanssimatto tarjoaa näennäisen neutralisoidun ja ajattoman topografian, johon tanssiva tai esiintyvä ruumis usein asetetaan. Tanssimatto on paikka, joka ei ole missään, mutta samanaikaisesti sillä on kyky olla yhteydessä moneen eri sfääriin esimerkiksi balettiin, butoon tai vatsatanssiin. Aistivaa ruumista hierotaan kirjaimellisesti tanssimattoa vasten. Tanssimatto on myös  öljyn johdannaistuote.

Projekti liikkuu erilaisten muotojen välillä, ja se voi olla yht’aikaa elävä veistos, koreografia, tanssi, installaatio, keskustelu ja performanssi.
